Joins His Brother John

The sad announcement of the death of Patrick Murphy was flashed from his home in Lafayette township shortly before noon Saturday. He was a victim of pneumonia, the same disease that carried off his brother John nine days before, their funerals occurring within a week of each other to the day.

Deceased was a native of County Limerick, Ireland, coming to this country several years after his brother John who emigrated in 1852, and would have been 74 years of age had he lived until March 17. He and two sisters followed their brother John to California, where the sisters married and have since died. The two brothers settled together in Lafayette township in 1865 on adjoining farms and have always been most tenderly devoted to each other, in fact their attachment was proverbial throughout the township, and it is safe to say that greater affection never existed between brothers. When Patrick heard of John’s death he said they would soon be together again and it is alleged that he told the grave digger to make calculations for both of them.

Mr. Murphy was married to Catherine Manning by whom he is survived with the following children, all at home except the two first named: Mary Crowe, James, Anna, Margaret, Thomas, Agnes, Patrick and Francis. One aged sister, Margaret, in the East and a brother Dan in Des Moines, also survive him. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father, a good neighbor and true friend. He enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him, which was attested by the large turnout at his funeral from Wexford Church Monday morning.

May his soul rest in peace.
