Marvin O Onsager

Marvin O. Onsager, Postville, died Dec. 22, here as a result of heart failure. Services were conducted Friday at Glenwood Lutheran Church by Rev. Landis Olson. Burial was at Pontoppidian Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were conducted by Sensor French Funeral Home, Decorah.

Marvin O. Onsager, son of Martin and Olga (Hagen) Onsager, was born Aug. 22, 1922 in Canoe Township, near Decorah.

He received his education in the Lee country school, rural Decorah. He was a corporal in the 558th Bomber Squadron, US Air Corps during World War II and received the Victory Medal-European, African and Middle Eastern Theater, silver and bronze battle stars, 3 overseas service bars and the Good Conduct Medal.

He married Lucille Horan Dec. 25, 1948 at Pontoppidian Lutheran Church. They had 3 children. They lived in rural Decorah where he was a farmer and then a rural mail carrier. Lucille died Oct. 22, 1972.

He was a member of Glenwood Lutheran church where he was a custodian, usher, member of the church council and served on the Worship Committee. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a leader of the Country Ramblers band and member of the Crickets band for several years.

Sept. 29, 1984 he married Lavilla Rowland at Prairie du Chien, WI. They lived in Postville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lucille, a son and daughter in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Lavilla; daughters, Mary Lou Sorum and Barbara Johnson, son, Michael Onsager, all of Decorah; 8 grandchildren; stepchildren Everett Rowland of Clermont, James Rowland of Postville and David Rowland of Aurora, CO; 8 step grandchildren; 1 brother, Nathan B. Onsager of Decorah.

Casket bearers were Scott and Paul Sorum, Shannon and Corey Onsager, Everett, James and David Rowland, Michael and Jeffrey Kruse. Honorary casket bearers were Ray and Joe Sweeney, Charlie Good, Pat and Dave Dougherty, Howard Sorenson, Russell Guyer, Spencer Tyler, Orville Bratrud, David Onsager, Steve Onsager and Lyle Hanson.
