Charles Edwin Hawkins

Charles E. Hawkins, 57, of Waukon died Thursday, September 24, 2009 at his home in rural Waukon after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m., with family visitation from 12-1 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Deb Lynd-Schmitz officiating. Lunch will be served after the service at the church. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is handling arrangements.

Charles Edwin Hawkins was born September 17, 1952 in Postville, the son of Edwin and Betty (Dundee) Hawkins. He was baptized at Forest Mills Methodist Church in rural Postville and confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. Chuck attended kindergarten in Postville and continued his education in Waukon.

He did some farm work, was a mechanic and worked at the Hygrade Packing Plant in Postville following school.
From 1974 until 1976 he served in the U.S. Army, spending much of his time with the border patrol while stationed in Germany. Following his discharge he worked with his father in the farm implement repair business.

In 1984 Chuck and his family moved to Colfax, WA, where he began an over-the-road trucking business and ran a repair shop for many years.

June 5, 1998 he married Roxanne Kay Dahlstrom in Coeur d’Alene, ID. He moved back to Waukon in 2003 but remained active in the trucking business until June of this year.
Chuck enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and his beloved dog, Colby. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and driving his Peterbilt. He was known to many as “A man who says so little, but means so much.”

Survivors include his wife, Roxanne, of Waukon; two children by a previous marriage, Lisa Hawkins and fiancé Trapper Elmquist of Lewiston, ID and Chad (Kasey) Hawkins of Garfield, WA; three step-children, Loni (Zach) Melton of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Thorsen of Moscow, ID, and Jay Thorsten of Rossville; two grandchildren, Ely and Ethan Hawkins; two step-grandchildren, Ella Thorsten and Cooper Melton; two sisters, Karen (Bill) Little of Waukon and Sheryl Hawkins of Texas City, TX; and three nephews, three great-nephews, and five great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Betty Hawkins; his grandparents, John and Clara Dundee and Sydney and Jessie Hawkins; and a step-grandson, Braylen Melton.
Honorary pallbearers are Dave Fish, Paul Dahlstrom, Bill Little, and Jay Thorsten.
