Pioneer Northeast Iowa Resident Dies
Postville -- Funeral services were held here Thursday afternoon in the Schutte funeral home for John Backhaus, 78, pioneer northeastern Iowa farmer, who died late Monday in the Postville Community hospital following a lingering illness.

The Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church here, officiated and burial was in the Luana cemetery. Pallbearers were William Kugel, Elmer Zieman, William Lubbers, Oran Dahms, Harold Brewer and Clarence Dahms.

During his lifetime, Mr. Backhaus was known as a very progressive farmer and was active in various northeastern Iowa farm organizations. Besides his widow he is survived by two sons, Albert and Arnold of Luana; four daughters, Mrs. Amanda Johanningmeier and Mrs. Florence Christofferson of Monona, Mrs. Louis Miller of Postville and Mrs. Elmer Schutte of Castalia; a stepson, Vernie Engle of Castalia; a brother, Henry of Garnavillo; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Putzler of Corsica, S. Dak., Mrs. Margaret Miller of Manly, Mrs. Anna Reichert of Littleport and Mrs. Katherine Meyer of Garnavillo, as well as 13 grandchildren.
