Rudolf Sylvester Anderson

Rudolf S. Anderson, 101, of Waukon died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, June 22 at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor J. Kincaid Smith officiating. Burial was at West Paint Creek Synod Cemetery.

Rudolf Sylvester Anderson was born June 16, 1908 on the Paint Creek Township, rural Waterville farm of his parents, John Martin and Martha Elisa (Busness) Anderson. He was baptized and confirmed at the West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church, where he remained a life-long member. Rudy attended the Ness rural elementary school and graduated from Waterville High School in 1926.

June 20, 1928 he married Gladys Louise Myregard at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Rudolf and Gladys farmed in the rural Waterville area for many years, operating a dairy herd and raising beef cattle, hogs, chickens and grain. Rudy loved everything about the farming life. He was particularly good with animals, and often helped his neighbors with their livestock as well. He was handy with fixing things around the farm, but also an accomplished carpenter and builder. Although he moved to Waukon in the late 1980s, he continued to make almost daily trips to the farm for many years.

Rudy was active in the community by serving on the Waterville School Board and holding various offices at the West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church. An avid outdoor lover, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and after moving to town, raised a large garden. He was a good baseball player in his youth and continued his interest in sports by following the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. Rudy loved music and played the guitar, banjo, harmonica and piano, all by ear. He liked to go dancing and was always ready to share a song. Other favorite pastimes included playing pool and cards and taking trips to visit family.

Survivors include four children, John M. (Beverly) Anderson of El Segundo, CA, Dr. Lawrence R. (Holly Wold) Anderson and Karen L. (Gary) Soper, both of Harpers Ferry, and Rudolf B.
