Hazel graduated from West Union High School and took the Normal Training curriculum for teaching.

In 1930 she married Robert Archer. Following his sudden death in 1938, she worked at Warner Brothers Clothing in West Union as a sales clerk and in the alterations department, and took in sewing on her own.
