Hazel Mae Robertson Jacobson was born February 18, 1911 in Chelsea, the daughter of Alva and Johanna (Jaeger) Robertson. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in West Union and confirmed as an adult at Waterville Lutheran Church. Hazel graduated from West Union High School and took the Normal Training curriculum for teaching.
In 1930 she married Robert Archer. Following his sudden death in 1938, she worked at Warner Brothers Clothing in West Union as a sales clerk and in the alterations department, and took in sewing on her own. May 16, 1942 she married Leslie Clarence Jacobson in Eldorado. Hazel and Les moved to Waterville, where she worked for 38 years as a bookkeeper at Waterville Farmers Co-op Creamery. She also had an upholstery shop in her home in Waterville where she worked well into her early 80s. Hazel moved to Waukon in 1983.
Hazel was a long-time member of Waterville Lutheran Church and its ladies organizations. She was an accomplished seamstress, making clothing for her family as well as others. Handiwork of all kinds, including crochet and quilting, were strong points for Hazel. She also spent a lot of time caring for and looking after her grandchildren.
