Virgil Otto Welper

Virgil Otto Welper, age 73, of New Albin passed away Monday, April 6, 2009 at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. Visitation and a Memorial Service were held Friday, April 10 at the New Albin Community Center in New Albin, with Pastor William Reese officiating. Military rites were provided by the New Albin VFW Post, and the American Legion Post of Caledonia, MN.

The family requests memorials be given to the New Albin Fire Department. Roble Funeral Home of Spring Grove, MN is in charge of arrangements.

Virgil was born September 14, 1935 in Waukon to Virgil and Irene (Buege) Welper. He was a lifelong New Albin area resident. He never married. Virgil was a New Albin High School graduate.

Through the years, Virgil worked for Ford garage in Caledonia, MN, Ray Hudson in LaCrosse, WI and Alfred Tabbot in New Albin, who he eventually bought the business from. Virgil served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany and received an award for Sharpshooter. He belonged to VFW Post of New Albin, and the American Legion Post in Caledonia, MN. Virgil was a member of St. Peter's Church in New Albin.

Virgil is survived by his brother, Delbert (Colleen) Welper of La Crescent, MN. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, Julie (Brian) Hunter, Leigh Ann Welper, Nancy (Jeff) Zadow, Joan (Mike) Tharp, Carla (Mark) Rambo, Ladon Butler, John (Rhonda) Welper, and David Welper.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett and Leslie; and his great nephew, Damien Hunter.
