1874-1963

Last rites for Mrs. Carrie Bakkum, who died March 18, were held at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. E.O. Baalson officiated and burial was in Old West Paint Creek Cemetery with Bakke and Hanson Funeral Service in charge. Pallbearers were Alton Hanson, Arthur Gilbertson, Rudolph Larson, Morris Larson, Kenneth Larson, and Lester Larson. Mrs. Bakkum, who was 89 years old at the time of her death, had lived with her son, Dr. Roy Bakkum, when he had his practice in the East Main Street building which later became the first wing of the Good Samaritan Home here. She stayed in this portion of the home when the deed turned this property over to the Good Samaritan Home, and has resided there ever since. The home was always her home until the end. Karen Martha Larson, daughter of Amund and Karen Larson, was born Feb. 19, 1874, near Maud. She was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek Church of which she was a life long member. On Nov. 24, 1896, she was married to Hans Robert Bakkum, at the Old West Paint Creek Church, with the Rev. Mr. Gronlid officiating. Mr. Bakkum and four of their children preceded her. Remaining are three sons, Arnold Bakkum of Waukon, Roy Bakkum of Brandenton, Fla., and William Bakkum of Manchester. There are six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, as well as two sisters, Mrs. Fred Lier of Lennox, SD., and Mrs. Anna Hanson of Waukon. Among the floral offerings at the funeral was a wreath from a granddaughter, Delores Ann Bakkum Nolan, who is now a resident of Wangunui, New Zealand.
