OBITUARY OF JEREMIAH RYAN 1828-1918
Died on Monday morning, Feb.18th, 1918, at his home at 2640 12th Ave, So., Minneapolis, Minn., Jeremiah Ryan. Death was due to a complication of ailments brought on by old age. He was born about the year 1828 in the town of Clonoulty, Goold’s Cross, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. There he received his education in the National schools and grew to young manhood and it was there also that he mastered the carpenter’s trade which he followed throughout his life. At the age of twenty-seven, in the company of others of his townsmen, he emigrated to America and landed in New York City. After spending a year in Brooklyn, he came to Galena, Ill., and thence to Allamakee Co., Ia., where relatives had preceded him. He located in the town of Harper’s Ferry and, together with David Harper, Hubert Guthneck and many others, who have long since travelled their last journey, became one of its pioneer settlers. In 1863 occurred his marriage with Margaret Collins. Ten children were born to bless their union, two of whom died in infancy.
All through his life the deceased was known as a bright and cheerful man. He was optimistic, lighthearted almost to a fault, frank and outspoken in his sentiments; that type of Irishman one meets with so rarely in these days. Restless and active, always deeply interest in the present, he led a busy and useful life. In and around Harper’s Ferry where, for fifty long years, he carried on the trade of general contractor and builder, stand many houses and structures, notably the old Parrel and Harper houses, silent monuments to this old man’s memory. Some twelve years ago he and his wife, to enjoy the fruits of their long toil, moved to Minneapolis where their children reside. Here he has lived ever since, where, by his cheery manner and good nature, he has made a host of friends. Five years ago this February he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding and the occasion found both in the best of health. He comes from a respectable old family, prominent in their part of Ireland, and his father Philip Ryan, was honoured for his courageous service under the Duke of Wellington at the battle of Waterloo.
Of his immediate family there are left to mourn him and respect his memory, a wife and eight children, five daughters and three sons: Mrs. Mary A. Ryan, Mrs. Thos. Kelly, Mrs. Bert J. Grady, Susie, Elizabeth, T. F. and Timothy J. of Minneapolis, and Geo. P. of Owatonna, also nine grand children.
After a requiem high mass at Holy Rosary church, burial took place in
St. Mary’s cemetery. May his soul rest in peace.~newspaper clipping
