Eleanor Bowles

Eleanor Bowles, of Decorah, formerly of Postville, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. She was 92.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 15, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, with the Reverend Steve Brackett officiating. Special music was provided by Joann Martins, organist, and Kim Schutte, soloist. Casket Bearers were Neil Struthers, Kenneth Meyer, Cloy Kuhse, Roger Williams, Dwight Bacon, and Lorraine Lenth. Interment was in the West Union Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Kathryn (Domke) Bowles was born December 16, 1915, at the home of her parents, Fred and Emma Annetta (Pape) Domke, in Highland Township, Clayton County, near Wadena. She was baptized at home on February 17, 1916, and confirmed May 12, 1929, in Arlington, both by Pastor Rembaed. Elearnor received her education in the Peterman Mink Creed School and graduated from the Wadena High School in 1935.

On February 24, 1940, Eleanor was married to George Edward Bowles in the Arlington Lutheran Church. To this union two children, Gary and Judy, were born. The couple purchased a farm six miles northeast of Postville in 1942. In 1969, George and Eleanor retired and moved into their new house in Postville. Eleanor was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, who died in 1978; and a brother, Dale Martin Domke.

Eleanor is survived by two children, Gary (Anna Marie) Bowles, Weston, Fla., and Judy (Elwyn) Dotzenrod, Decorah; two grandchildren, Wendy Ann (Daniel) Spilde, Decorah, and Daniela Butler (David) Ettlinger, Weston, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Hailey Spilde and Hunter Spilde, both of Decorah, and Michael Ettlinger, Weston, Fla.; a brother, Fred Leo Domke, Phoenix, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Lois Domke, Carlisle.
