Dr. Delos Elmer Tinker

Dr. D. E. Tinker, of Stevens Point, Wis., passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 5, 2008, at the Oakridge Senior Living in Stevens Point, Wis. He was 95.

A Memorial Service was held Saturday, November 15, at the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, with the Reverend Gary Catterson officiating. Special music was provided by Beverly Bacon, organist, and Christine Enyart, soloist. Inurnment was in the Elgin Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Delos "Doc" Elmer Tinker was born July 9, 1913 in Strawberry Point, the son of John and Addie (Carpenter) Tinker. Doc graduated from the Strawberry Point High School in 1930 and the University of Iowa Dental College in 1939. From 1939 to 1951, he practiced dentistry in Elgin. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps in Fort Riley, Kan., from 1943 to 1946. In 1951, Dr. Tinker moved to Postville, where he practiced dentistry until he retired in 1982. He was a member of the Northeast Iowa Dental Study Club, Dubuque District Dental Society, the Iowa Dental Association and the American Dental Association.

Doc was married to Lois Lehman on August 30, 1940 at the Methodist Church in Elgin. To this union three children were born.

Doc will be remembered for his gentle, loving disposition and great sense of humor. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed embellishing his fish stories. He and his family enjoyed their cabin on the Mississippi River. After retiring, Doc and Lois spent their winters in Texas.

Lois preceded him in death on January 13, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Tinker and Darwin Tinker.

He is survived by his children, Alan (Kathy) Tinker, Plano, Texas, Barbara (Rolf) Garthus, Amherst, Wis., and David Tinker of St. Paul, Minn. He is also survived by grandchildren, Mark (Paige) Tinker and Anne Marie Tinker of Dallas, Texas, Eric (Julie) Garthus, Hortonville, Wis., and Ben Garthus, Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Luke and Emma Garthus, Hortonville, and Alex Tinker, Dallas; a sister-in-law, Marian Tinker, Chicago; and a number of nieces and nephews.
