Barbara Opheim 1929-2008
Barbara Corinne Opheim, 79, of Waukon died Monday, November 3, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, November 7 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Barbara Corinne Opheim was born October 14, 1929 in Anamosa, the daughter of Allen and Lynne (Heasty) Chatterton. She grew up on a farm near Onslow, attending rural elementary schools and graduating from Onslow Community High School. After working as a secretary for a short time, Barbara married Kenneth Heeren in 1948. They were later divorced.
She spent several years working at Collins Radio in Anamosa before moving to Harpers Ferry in 1963, where she was a busy mother and homemaker, worked at Northern Engraving in Lansing, and as a waitress at area restaurants. In 1977 she married Gordon Opheim. They lived and worked in the Cedar Rapids area before retiring to Harpers Ferry in 1994.
Barbara was a member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church and its Ladies Circles. She liked the outdoors and enjoyed watching the birds and other wildlife from her home. Spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, and watching football on television were some of her other favorite pastimes. Barbara and Gordon enjoyed traveling and spent several winters in Florida.
Survivors include four children, Kathleen (Ralph) Hammel of Dorchester, Gerald Heeren of Avondale, AZ, Doug (Mary) Heeren of Winfield, TX, and Maralee (Larry) Kraus of Largo, FL; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two step-children, Janelle (Kenneth) Miller of Cedar Rapids and David Opheim of Houston, TX; a step-daughter-in-law, Patricia Opheim of Cedar Rapids; several step-grand and step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Boyd (Audrey) Chatterton of Onslow. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon; a step-son, Kevin Opheim; and a sister, Twila Herren.
Casketbearers were her grandchildren. Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
