Rev. E James "Jim" Elvig

Rev. E. James "Jim" Elvig, age 77, of Grand Rapids, MN went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday November 3, 2008 after a year-long struggle with stomach cancer. Funeral services were held at the Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids, MN. Inurnment was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Jim was the son of Henry and Loleta Elvig, born in Brainerd, MN December 10, 1930. His early years were spent working on the family farm and more preferably behind the soda fountain at the family drug store in Brainerd. Jim graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, where he met his sweetheart, Marjorie. He united in marriage to Marjorie Binns August 17, 1956, in Newark, NJ.

Jim graduated from Faith Seminary in Philadelphia, PA and Dubuque Theological Seminary in Dubuque. Jim, a Presbyterian Pastor for 47 years, served many churches in the Midwest and Grand Rapids area but most recently at Bowstring Chapel, Deer River and Riverside Presbyterian in Big Fork, MN. He also served at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and Frankville Community Presbyterian near Postville from 1982-1993. Jim also served churches in Hazelton, Littleton, Stanwood and Pleasant Grove from 1960-1968. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend.

Jim will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, sense of humor and legacy of faith. He was an avid reader, gardener, expert woodworker and fisherman.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Stephen and Paul; and two infant grandsons, Patrick Riley and Jacob Von Duyke. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Margie; five daughters, Nancy (Tom) Ringgenberg of Minneapolis, MN, Betsy (Andy) Von Duyke of Minnetonka, MN, Susan (Bill) Neumeister of Minneapolis, MN, Laurie Elvig (Joe) Riley of Cold Spring, MN, and Patricia (Michael) Reed of Eden Prairie, MN; two sisters, Virginia (Dick) Bender of Brainerd, MN and Martha Look of Nisswa, MN; one brother, Charles (June) Elvig of Bothel, WA; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Wiedenman of Minnetonka of MN; one cousin, Marilyn Ashmun of Brainerd, MN; several nieces and nephews; and 15 grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Rowe Funeral Home of Grand Rapids, MN.
