Another of Waukon’s pioneer mothers, Mrs. Ellen DONOVAN, 82, was called to her eternal rest, her death occurring at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret HOWES. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael SULLIVAN, she was born at Dubuque June 15, 1858. When she was 9 years old, she came to Allamakee County with her parents, settling on a farm on Silver Creek, six miles north of Waukon. Following the death of her husband, Michael DONOVAN in 1924, she came to Waukon to reside.
Thirteen children were born to this union, all of whom survive and with members of their families attended the funeral services. There is also a sister, Mrs. Ernest WINTERS of Mason City left to mourn.Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s church, conducted by Rev. Joseph KROCHESKI. Burial took place at the Lycurgus cemetery. Pall bearers were P.J. MAHONEY, Patrick TIERNEY, Patrick McCAULEY, Robert CONNOR, John MURPHY and Francis DEVITT.

Dies Suddenly FridayAnother of Waukon’s pioneer mothers, Mrs. Ellen Donovan, 82 was called to her eternal rest Friday, her death occurring at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Howes. Deceased had been in failing health for three years past, but a sudden heart attack at eight o’clock that evening caused her death two hours later.
A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sullivan, she was born at Dubuque June 15, 1858. When nine years old she came to Allamakee County with her parents, settling on a farm in French Creek Township, six miles north of Waukon. Following the death of her husband, Michael Donovan in 1924 she came to Waukon to reside.
Thirteen children were born to this union, six girls and seven boys namely: Mrs. Henry Haas, Mrs. Margaret Howes, Mrs. Cora Gavin and Mrs. Andy Bresnahan all of Waukon: Mrs. Michael Devitt, Hanover township; Mrs. Leo Bresnahan and Charles Donovan, French Creek township; James, William, Jerry, David, Thomas and George residing at St. Paul, all of whom survive and with members of their families attended the funeral services. There is also a sister Mrs. Ernest Winters of Mason City, left to mourn; 30 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The body was taken to Martin Bros. funeral home, where many friends called to pay their last respects to this estimable and highly esteemed woman. Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Patrick’s church conducted by Rev. Fr. Joseph Krocheski. Burial took place in the Lycurgus cemetery. The pall bearers were P.J. Mahoney Patrick Tierney, Patrick McCauley, Robert Connor, John Murphy and Francis Devitt.
