John Frederick Gericke

John Frederick Gericke passed away at his home in Postville Thursday, August 28, 2008, at the age of 65 years, eight months, and 11 days. A Memorial Service was held Sunday, August 31 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Postville, with the Reverend Steve Brackett officiating. Special music was provided by Linda Bacon, pianist and Josh Grau, soloist.

Inurnment was in the Monona Cemetery at Monona. Casketbearers were Donnie Meyer, Danny Meyer, David Meyer, Jim Bork, Brian Looney, Chris Looney, Kollin Berg. Honorary casketbearers were Marj and Ordell Kjosa, Fran and Arlin Schager, Kay and Doug Ruckdaschel, Linda and Ronnie Trudo, Kathy and Alan Tinker. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

John Frederick Gericke was born December 17, 1942 at Postville to Milo John Gericke and Letha Helen (Hesner) Gericke. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. John graduated from Postville High School in 1960 and from Upper Iowa University with a BA Degree in Economics. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1960 to 1963.

John was married to Barbara Looney May 25, 1968 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Postville. To this union a son, Anthony, was born. From 1968 until 1992 John was employed as Director of Member Services at the Allamakee-Clayton Cooperative in Postville. He was a self-employed truck driver until 2004, when he retired.

John had many interests, including running, tennis, and rebuilding cars. He was an avid reader and enjoyed frequenting libraries in the area.

John served on the Postville Public Library Board for several years. He had been a member of the Postville Commercial Club and served as President, a member of the Board of Adjustment for the City of Postville and a distinguished member of the "DX Coffee Club." Among his various accomplishments, John had earned a Brown Belt in Tae Kwan Do.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Anthony of Burnsville, MN; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Jane Meyer of Waukon, Mike and Dorothy Looney, Susan Looney, Mark and Diane Looney, Loren Looney, and Doug and Teresa Berg, all of Postville; nieces and nephews; cousins; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Letha Gericke.
