Funeral Rites Thursday For Mrs. John Leyer
1878 - 1953
The funeral services for Mrs John Layer, of Waukon were last Thursday afternoon from Martin Bros. funeral parlors to the Presbyterian Church and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. A. H. Grossheimer. Burial was made in Oakland Cemetery. Soloist Mrs. John Tidball sang "Rock of Ages" and "Sweet Peace" accompanied by organist Mrs. Floyd Larson. Pall bearers were Fritz Berg, Jerry Schultz, Donald Bulman, Floyd Larson, Dr. L. L. Shurtleff and Dr. Warren Hayes.
As was noted in last weeks issue of the Journal, Mrs. Layer died at her home Tuesday morning following a period of ill health.

She was born in Switzerland on May 15,1878, her maiden name being Mary Soff a Bernesconi. When young, she came to the United States and on February 11, 1908, she was married to John Layer at Lincoln, Neb. establishing their first home at Ellendale, N. Dak., for many years. In 1929 they came to Allamakee oounty and lived on a farm southeast of Churchtown until 1939 when they reired to Waukon. They had been occupying an apartment in the Mrs. Alert Steffen house in West Waukon for a couple of years. While she was able she was an active member of the Presbytertian Church.

She is survived by her husband and five daughters who, are as follows: Miss Edna Layer and Mrs. Hartsel Feuerhelm;both of Des Moines; Mrs. Herbert Feuerhelm, Mrs Alfred Hirth and Mrs. Cletus Dee, all of near Lansing. There are six grand children.
