Mrs. Roland Bakewell (1908-1935)
Passes Away Monday

LIFE'S FITFUL FEVER OVER FOR YOUNG SCHOOL TEACHER; DEATH COMES SEPT. 2.
Several weeks ago we mentioned the departure of Mrs. Roland Bakewell for La Crosse to enter the Lutheran hospital there for an operation for stomach ulcers. The operation was supposedly successful, about half of the stomach being removed, and in a few weeks she was enabled to return home, with the doctor's assurance that she would 'be enabled to resume her school work at Lowden, Iowa.
But such was not to be. After being back home for a week or ten days she had to return for further treatment and the end came on Monday, September 2. Her good friend, Mrs. Helga Leech, accompanied her to the: hospital on both occasions and remained with her to the last.
The departed, Emma Hartong Bakewell, daughter of John and Carrie Hartong, was born July 8, 1908, in Center township. At an early age her parents died and for several years she made her home with the William Gelo family in Lansing, finishing high school here, and fitting herself for the teaching profession at the Cedar Falls teachers' college.
After spending a year there, she taught in the rural schools of this ,county for four years and then, on June 11, 1924, was happily married to Roland Bakewell, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Bakewell of Lansing. They left immediately for Seattle, Wah., where they resided for two years. Then they removed to Chicago, where her husband died Dec. 14, 1926.
After the death of her husband, she returned to Lansing and lived with the Reuben Bakewell family, finishing at Cedar Falls in the meantime and afterward teaching for five years at Lowden, where she was rehired for this year.
Since April, 1924, Mrs. Bakewell has been a faithful member of the Lansing Federated church. Her sickness began last March, and in July she underwent an operation, which as above stated, proved to be the beginning of the end. She leaves to mourn her loss her brothers Herman and family of Center township, and Irving and family of French Creek township, the Reuben Bakewell family and many friends.
The funeral will be held from the Lansing Federated church this Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. H. J. Noeding officiating, and all that was mortal of this good woman, whose beautiful Christian character was a joy and inspiration to all who knew her, will be laid to rest in the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery.
