Leota Elizabeth Snitker
Leota E. Snitker, 90, of Waukon, IA, died Monday, June 23, 2008 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services were held Friday, June 27, 2008 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial of ashes will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Leota Elizabeth Snitker was born on March 1, 1918 in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Ervin M. and Cora L. (Goeke) Phipps. She grew up on a farm south of Waukon, was baptized and confirmed at First Presbyterian Church and attended rural area schools.
She married Elmer Ehde in 1937 and they were later divorced. In 1946 Leota married Ronald Snitker and they continued farming on his farm north of Waukon. Leota loved all aspects of the farm life, but was particularly fond of her Holstein dairy cows. They ran a progressive operation and were one of the first in the area to install a milking parlor. In the late 1960s they moved to Waukon where Leota worked as a housekeeper. In the late 1980s they moved again, first to Hawaii for a year and then to Punta Gorda, FL. Although Ronald died in Florida in 1997, Leota continued to live there until moving back to Waukon in 2002.
She was a very active member of the Allamakee County Farm Bureau and also the women’s groups at First Presbyterian Church. Leota enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards and traveling. She was also an avid reader and liked spending time following all the activities of her family members.
Survivors in her blended family include 6 children, Shirley Pausch and Lollie (Gary) Hirth, both of Waukon, Ronald (Kathy) Snitker of Ft. Myers, FL, Charles (Sharon) Snitker of Solon, IA, Mary Kaye (Tony) Ernst of Linden, TN, and Kenneth (Theresa) Snitker of Blairstown, IA; a daughter-in-law, Donna Snitker of Waukon; 26 grandchildren, Sheila McKee, Diane Bissell, Mike Snitker, Linda Ricketts, Bonnie Brink, Peggy Sass, Susan Snitker, Mark Snitker, Sandra Leska, Marsha Deardeuff, Debbie Shaw, Scott Snitker, Patti Henry, Greg Snitker, Sean Rolig, Chris Rolig, Rhonda Rolig, Shor Rolig, Kenny Snitker Jr., Kevin Snitker, Randy Pausch, Greg Hirth, Wayne Hirth, Jerry Hirth, Lisa McCaughey and Brent Hirth; 45 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lorna Skicki of Wisconsin Rapids, WI and Wilma (Lloyd) Miller of Waukon; and 3 brothers, Howard Phipps of Goshen, OH, Vernon (Mickey) Phipps of Romeoville, IL and Merton (Darlene Klein) Phipps of Waukon.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ronald; 2 sons, James and Alan Snitker; 3 grandchildren, David Pausch, Richard Hirth and Darren Snitker; a great-grandchild, Jeremy Bissell; and 6 sisters, Ruby Randa, Iva Mason, Mae Greene, Betty Marti, Edith Marti and Norma Phipps.
Her grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
