Leona A. Sherman, 90, of Waukon, died Thursday, December 5, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, December 9 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with the arrangements. Leona Alma Roth was born on July 23, 1912, on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, farm of her parents, Herman and Mary (Osterholz) Roth. She graduated as valedictorian of Waukon High School in 1930 and attended Waukon Junior College. Leona worked as a legal secretary in Waukon for G.B. Richter and also in Chicago for several firms from 1936 until 1939. On February 1, 1940, she married William Theodore Sherman at the Salem United Church of Christ parsonage in rural Waukon. They farmed together in rural Waukon for many years and Leona did field work, milking, and fed pigs and chickens. After her children were older, she continued her legal secretary work for Morrow & Shafer and Jacobson & Bristol, both firms of Waukon. Leona was an active member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon where she was confirmed, taught Sunday and Bible School, belonged to Women's Fellowship, and served as organist for several years. She was also a member of Searchlight Club and involved with 4-H. She enjoyed music and reading. She and Bill also enjoyed several bus trips together as well as trips to visit their children. Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Westberg of Durango, Colo.; a son, Dean (Hannelore) Sherman of Marquette, Mich.; two grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband William, and a brother, Harold Roth. Casket bearers were Eugene Sanderman, Tom and Gordon Hansmeier, Dick and John Prestemon, and Bill Stock.
