Jean Hastings
Jean G. Hastings, 73, of Waukon died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, April 25 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial was at Zalmona Cemetery.
Jean Gertrude Hastings was born January 17, 1935 in Waukon, the daughter of Arthur David and Emma Charlotte (Snitker) Schmidt. She grew up on a farm west of Waukon and was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church. Jean attended the rural Emmet School before graduating from Waukon High School in 1953.
July 18, 1954 she married Keith McKinley Hastings at Zalmona Church. After marriage she worked as a secretary for Dr. Bob Sander in his veterinary practice, taking a couple of years off to be a full-time mom when her children were both young, but then later returning. When Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank opened in Waukon, she went to work there, spending most of her time as a drive-up window teller. Her banking career spanned 43 years until her retirement in 2005.
Some of Jean's favorite times were spent in her garden, where she raised lots of vegetables in addition to lining the house with flowers. She also enjoyed collecting sugar and creamer sets and Campbell's Soup memorabilia. Together with Keith, Jean regularly attended community events and they loved to take leisurely drives through the local countryside. They also liked to travel, enjoying some wonderful family vacation adventures when the boys were young and later exploring the eastern states while visiting Kendall's family. She became very fond of spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband Keith of Waukon; two sons, Kendall (Jennifer) of Mendham, NJ and Kevin of Decorah; two grandchildren, Colin and Arianna; and two sisters, Clara (Robert) Heaton of Greenville, SC and Dorothy (Robert) Thompson of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Caroline Koth and Norma Henning; and a brother, Henry Schmidt.
Casketbearers are Ron, Darrell, Scott and Mark Henning, Charles Koth, Dave and Ken Kruger, Randy and Larry Snitker, David Thompson and Don Henningsgaard.
