Winifred Monroe

Winifred "Winnie" Monroe, age 80, of Waukon and formerly of Lansing, died Wednesday evening, March 19, 2003, at Good Samaritan nursing Home in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, March 24 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. Dan Knipper officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing assisted with arrangements

Winnie was born in Lansing November 27, 1922, to Herbert and Eva (Van Brocklin) Gander. She was a lifelong Allamakee County resident.

She married Leo Monroe September 11, 1941, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. She worked at the Lansing Button Factory for a number of years. Later, she and her husband owned and operated the L&W Cafe in Lansing. Following that they farmed in Ludlow Township.

Survivors include three children, Patricia Monroe of Cedar Rapids, Lynda (Rick) Valley of Decorah, and Manley "Mike" (Suzanne) Monroe of Postville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Leonette (Elmer) Wittman of Hector, Minn., and her three children, Glenn, Nancy, and Boyd; and a nephew, Richard (Jackie) Gander of Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, on April 13, 1995, and a brother, Cletus Gander.

Honorary casketbearers were Glenn Conner, Earl Gander, Jean Gander, Walter Johnson, and LaVon Steffenson. Casketbearers were Patrick, Glen, Kevin, Kody and Jennifer Monroe and Angela Valley.
