Katie Kerr Scheffert

Katie Kerr Scheffert, age 64 years, five months, and 24 days, passed away Friday, March 28, 2008 at the Franciscan-Skemp Health Care Center in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 2 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, with the Reverends Steve Brackett and Gary Catterson presiding.

The organist was Marian Schutte and special music was provided by Becky Blumhagen Gravett. Casketbearers were Craig Rima, Judd Rima, Mike Frieden, Steve Frieden, Brian Frieden, Brad Porterfield, Don Meyer, Dan Meyer, David Meyer, and Adam Parsons. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen "Katie" Helen (Meyer) Kerr Scheffert was born October 4, 1943 at the Postville Community Hospital in Postville to Vernas and Beulah (Harris) Meyer. She was baptized April 7, 1953 by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig at St. Paul Lutheran Church and confirmed there by the Reverend Charles E. Witt on April 14, 1957. Katie graduated from the Postville High School in 1961.

July 23, 1961 Katie was married to Robert "Sonny" Duane Kerr, Jr. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville by the Reverend Charles E. Witt. To this union two sons, Kim and Kevin, were born.

Katie worked as a nurse's aid at the Good Samaritan Center for nine years. She became the manager of Casey's General Store in Postville when it opened in October of 1978. For 30 years Katie has been putting in over 50-hour weeks as the store's manager. Because of her skills of organization and cleanliness, the store received excellent ratings at each inspection visit by the store supervisor.

She was active in supporting sports and school activities, including the Booster Club. She always had time to help others with their household chores or to take food to friends and neighbors in their time of need. Katie enjoyed having her family around her, and was an avid card player. She especially cherished the time spent at their home near the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien, WI. Her husband, "Sonny," died August 19, 2000, as the result of injuries received in a truck accident.

May 3, 2003 Katie was married to Duane L. Scheffert at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona. They made their home in Postville. Katie was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert "Sonny" Kerr; a sister, Nancy Ulrich; and two nephews, Joey Porterfield and Chris Rima.

Surviving are her husband, Duane; two sons, Kim (Karen) Kerr of Cape Coral, FL, Kevin (Debra) Kerr of Postville; six grandchildren, Kollin, Kaitlyn, and Kourtney Kerr, Kelli (Jarrod) Olson, Kendra (fiance, Kody Monroe), and Keisha Kerr; three sisters, Elaine (Jim) Rima of Oquawka, IL, Sharon "Pat" Nieman of Prairie du Chien, WI, and Karen Meyer of Postville; and a brother, Dennis (Jane) Meyer of Waukon; two stepchildren, Tonya (Roger) Kregel of Dumont and Troy (Kristine) Scheffert of Batavia, IL; four step grandchildren, Becca and Bailey Kregel, and Joshua and Alison Scheffert; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Donald and Donna Lou Huinker, Baraboo, WI and Arlen and Marian Scheffert of North Liberty.
