Helen Verna Bruns
Helen V. Bruns, 86, of Waukon died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 2 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Reuben Grueneich officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Helen Verna Bruns was born July 21, 1921 at Elon, the daughter of Oscar Hans and Hannah Victoria (Ahlquist) Johnson. She was baptized at Center Baptist Church in rural Lansing. She attended rural Allamakee country schools and graduated from Waukon High School. Helen married Roy Forkner and they were later divorced. For many years, Helen lived in Maryland and Delaware, where she had various jobs.
She married Herbert Theodore Bruns October 22, 1953 in Clinton. They moved back to Waukon, where she raised her family. Helen and Herb owned and operated the Snack Shoppe Cafe in Waukon for many years. Helen enjoyed fishing, sewing, crocheting, baking bread, canning vegetables and making jams. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Ronda (Wayne) Thorstenson, Patricia Bruns, Cheryl (Curt) Roe and Mary Bruns, all of Waukon, Nancy (Bob) Sloup of Wahoo, NE, Ken (Kathryn) Bruns of Gary, SD, Laurayne (DuWayne) Snitker of Waukon, Bob (Lori) Bruns of Hawley, MN, Ron (Colleen) Bruns of Eagen, MN and Linda (Charles) Albright of Independence; 26 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herbert, who died December 4, 2005; two infant sons, Richard and Steven; a granddaughter, Beth Bruns; two great-granddaughters, Chantel Snitker and Sarah Schaller; two brothers, Reuben and John Johnson; and two sisters, Evelyn Anderson and Irene Haack.
Casketbearers are Ken and Ron Bruns, Eric Thorstenson, Ryne Hartkemeyer, and Shawn and Shayne Roe. Honorary casketbearers are her other grandchildren.
