Harlan C. Schellhammer, 86, of Lansing died Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, February 4 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson and Rev. Roger Graham officiating. Burial was in Lansing Ridge Cemetery, rural Lansing.
Harlan Charles Schellhammer was born March 29, 1921 in Center Township of Allamakee County. His parents were Charles and Alma (Schweinfurth) Schellhammer. He was baptized and confirmed at the Churchtown Church and attended Center #2 rural school. After his schooling he worked for several area farmers and spent two years at Rath Packing Plant in Waterloo before returning to Allamakee County.
August 8, 1950 he married Delores Agnes Shogren at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Harlan and Delores farmed in rural Lansing for many years. They raised capons, pigs and grain, but Harlan took special pride in his dairy operation, working hard to improve the herd and its production. He was very conscious of caring for the land and put a lot of effort into employing good conservation practices on his farm. In 1962 he lost a leg in a silo blower accident, but after rehabilitation was able to continue to be fully active in the farming operation. His farming efforts led to winning the Outstanding Cooperator Award for Soil Conservation in 1983 and the Allamakee County Distinguished Dairyman Award in 1987. He was a member of the Board of Directors at Calhoun Creamery for 18 years and served on a number of other boards and won various other awards in the field of agriculture over the years.
Faith was an important part of Harlan's life. Between the Churchtown Church and First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, he taught Sunday School for 39 years and served as Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of Gideons International and often did lay preaching at area care facilities. Growing roses, cooking, collecting coins and reading everything he could get his hands on were some of his pastimes. He was a longtime baseball fan and coached the Churchtown Cardinals in a local league as a young man. Harlan also liked to travel and particularly enjoyed a trip to Switzerland and several ag tours he made to different parts of the country.
Survivors include his wife, Delores of Lansing; his children, Lynn Schellhammer of Indianapolis, IN and Larry (Cindy) Schellhammer of Waukon; two grandchildren, John and Leah; a brother, Ralph (Eunice) Schellhammer of Waukon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marlys Berg.
Honorary casketbearers are Claude and Bernice Schafer, Harold and Shirley Marti, Willard and Arlene Kerndt, Gene and Darlene Oesterle, Morris and Dillis Schellhammer, and Dave and Jan Winnes. Casketbearers are Dean and Bruce Schellhammer, and Terry, Dave, Danny, Andy and Rick Shogren.
