Obituary of Clara Fitzgerald; Allamakee Journal, November 3, 2004

Clara Theodora Fitzgerald was born on February 18, 1913 in Lansing, IA, the daughter of Helmer and Anna (Gander) Aschom. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing and graduated from Immacualte Conception High School. Following school she worked at the Lansing Button Factory for a number of years. On February 24, 1941 Clara married Carl James Fitzgerald at Immmaculate Conception Church. They moved to Milwaukee for a short time before returning to Lansing where they started a roofing business. Clara handled the bookkeeeping and many of the financial matters. In 1960 they moved to Waukon where they continued to operate Fitzgerald Roofing. Clara also owned and operated Fitzgerald GIft House in Waukon from 1963 until 1969.

Since moving to Waukon, Clara has been a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was an expert seamstress and needleworker as well as being a very good baker and cake decorator. Her hobbies included making ceramics, gardening and raising African violets. She was particularly well known for seasonally decorating her home both inside and out.

Clara died Saturday, October 30, 2004 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness at the age of 91. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 3rd at 10:00 am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was held in Gethsemane Cemetary in Lansing, IA. Friends called from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there was a 4:00 pm Scripture Service.

Survivors include her husband Carl of Waukon; 3 children, Anna Mae Kurt of Waukon, James E. Fitzgerald of Kenosha, Wi, and Mary Jo Fitzgerald of Tucson, AZ; 4 grandchildren, Stephanie (Ryan) Petersen, Carrie (Kevin) Pok, Elissa (Matthew) Petkovic and Patrick Fitzgerald; 3 great-grandchildren, Carson Petersen and NIcole and Ashley Petkovic; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter-in-law, Clare Fitzgerald; a son-in-law, Crispin Kurt; 3 sisters, Helen Gourley, Leona Aschom and Georgia Schneider; and a brother, Norbert Aschom.

Casketbearers were Patrick Fitzgerald, Ryan Petersen, Kevin Pok and Matthew Petkovic.
