David B. Steele

In the passing of Mr. David B. Steele at his home northwest of town last Friday, one of the oldest residents of the county and an early pioneer has left us. Mr. Steele passed his eighty-seventh birthday about a month ago and at that time it was felt that he might survive some years longer though in rather feeble health, but the weight of years pressed too heavily on him and he calmly and peacefully dropped into "that sleep which knows no waking."

Mr. Steele was born in Orange county, N. Y., April 19, 1820. He moved with his parents, first to Philadelphia, and then to Adamsville, Crawford county, Pennsylvania. March 27, 1845 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Ralston and seventeen years later, the family came to Iowa settling first on what was known as the old Daley place in Union Prairie township, later living near the stone school house on West Ridge but for the past thirty-two years they have resided at their present home about a mile from town.

Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Steele: J. Taylor Steele, Mrs. Nancy Jones, Mrs. Hannah Clark, Robert, Nelson and Maggie, all of Waukon and vicinity, the last two at the old homestead, James. H. of Lake Andes, S. D., Mrs. Martha Moore and Mrs. Mary Richardson of White, S. D. The children with the wife survive the death of the father being the first break in the family ties extending over a period of sixty-two years.

A brief burial service was held at the family home Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Caffyn after which the body was borne to its last resting place at Oakland. The regular funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church next Sunday this being in accordance with Mr. Steele's desire. The service will be conducted by Rev. Van Nice of the C. P. church of which Mr. Steele was a consistent and honorable member.

A good husband and father an upright citizen and a true Christian character has passed from us in the death of Mr. Steele.
