When Macie was 12 months old, the family moved to Elkader, Iowa. She graduated from high school and taught in the rural schools for five years. Macie then attended and was graduated from Pitzi's School of Cosmetology. She worked as a beautician for a short time.

She moved to the Fairview Guest Home at New Hampton in April of 1981. Macie became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville on April 13, 1991.
