Claire Margaret (Heatley) Whittle

Claire M. Whittle, 82, of Waukon died Friday, January 18, 2008 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, January 21 at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church in rural Lansing, with Fr. Louis Trzil officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Claire Margaret Whittle was born July 21, 1925 in Ft. Dodge. Her parents were Ben and Anna (McMahon) Heatley. She attended school in Harpers Ferry and Waukon and also went to Waukon Jr. College, where she took the normal training curriculum to become a teacher. Following school she taught for several years at the Sweet Ridge School in Lafayette Township.

February 11, 1947 she married Virgil Paul Whittle at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dubuque. Claire and Virgil lived in Dubuque until 1951, when they purchased the Wexford area farm that her family had homesteaded. They raised a dairy herd, crops and horses for many years.

Claire was a member of Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She enjoyed being part of a neighborhood homemakers club and card club. Her pastimes included raising flowers, doing crochet and crafts, listening to music and following the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. Claire very much enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, Larry (Bev) Whittle and Alan (Carmen) Whittle, both of Decorah, and Gary (Carol) Whittle of Harpers Ferry; two daughters, Eileen (John) Curtin and Bonnie (Ray) Wagner, both of Lansing; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, William and Rachel Voss, Skie Troester and Nathan Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Virgil, who died in 2005.

Honorary casketbearers were her granddaughters, Kelli Brown, Julie Voss, Cheryl Wagner, Jenna Whittle, Lea Ann Van Vliet and Katie Schultz. Casketbearers were her grandsons, Aaron, Jesse, Derek and Matthew Whittle, Brian and Brad Curtin, Tom and Paul Wagner, and Logan Schultz.
