DIED - Mrs. Meribah HULSE at Ion, Aug 6, 1885, at the age of 61 years. She was a resident of this part of Iowa since 1856. She was the mother
of twelve children, three of whom survive. For the past twenty years, she was afflicted with blindness. She was a member of the M. E. church
for forty-two years and her funeral was preached by Rev. F. A. MILLER.

Meribah HELMS HULSE was the wife of
Silas C. HULSE (1822 – 1887 Goshen, Orange County, New York, son of Benjamin and Esther DAY HULSE). They were married about 1845 in Pike
County, Pennsylvania. Meribah was born in Pennsylvania on 20 Jan 1825, the daughter of Solomon and Mary HELMS. She and her husband were among the earliest settlers to Allamakee County, having moved there in 1854 and residing in Ion, Fairview Township. She is buried in Ion Methodist
Cemetery in Ion, Allamakee County.

Her known children were Alanson Manlius (ca1846-1869); Hiram (1847-1871); Esther Jane (ca1850-bef 1856); Martha (1851-ca1856); Mary (1854-1857); George W. (ca1857-bef 1870); Jane (1862-aft 1885); Libbie (aft 1860-1868); Charles (1868-aft 1885); Lydia (1871-aft 1885).
