Jerry James Dunlevy, Sr.

Jerry James Dunlevy, Sr., 86, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2007. He was born in Lansing February 12, 1921. His parents were Richard and Agnes Curran Dunlevy. His maternal grandparents were James Curran and Anne Guider Curran. His paternal grandparents were John J. Dunlevy and Jeanette McGarrity Dunlevy. John and his brother Thomas founded the "Allamakee Journal Newspaper."

Jerry was called Jake by his friends and cousins. He graduated from the Immaculate Conception grade and high school were he also attended church. He loved Lansing, the Mississippi River and the bluffs. He returned frequently to attend Curran-Guider reunions.

He graduated from Waukon Junior College where he had many family and friends. He said that growing up in Lansing was the value foundation for his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Antoinette Coon, and their children: Jerry James Dunlevy, Jr. (Andrea), Gail Clute (Charles) of Cincinnati, OH, Kathleen Lawrence of Los Angeles, CA, Mary Huffman (Chuck), Joan Cimyotte (Nick) of Denver, CO and Carol Dunlevy (Ellis); 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Janet (Frank) Lewis of Lafayette, CO.

He graduated from University of Iowa in 1942 and immediately entered the United States Marines Corps. After officer training he was sent to Harvard for radar training. He was assigned as Communication Officer and sent to Emirau Island in the South Pacific. Remaining in the USMC Reserves, he served at the Opa Laka, FL air base during the Korean conflict. After 23 years of service, he retired a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a member of the American Legion and Marine Reserve Officer Association.

He was a teacher in the IPS school system for over 20 years. After retiring, he continued to substitute teach at Pike and Wayne Township schools until 1998. He earned his teaching Certification at Butler University in 1971 and his Masters Degree in Education at Indiana University in 1975.

He was the first Democrat elected to the Pike Township Advisory Board in 1996 and re-elected in 2000. He was a member of the Pike Township Democratic Club. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Governor Frank O'Bannon awarded him the Sagamore of the Wabash, citing Jerry as "Distinguished by his Humanity in Living, his Loyalty in Friendship, his Wisdom in Council and his Inspiration in Leadership."

He was active at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church and was President of their St. Vincent de Paul chapter.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 14 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral 2950 N. High School Rd. A mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m., December 15 at St Gabriel's Catholic Church, 6000 W. 34th St. Burial followed at Our Lady Of Peace Cemetery.

Donations may be made to The St. Vincent de Paul Society in his honor.
