Florence M. Van Gorp
Florence Mae (Davis) Van Gorp, 83, died Sunday, November 4, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a long illness. A Memorial Service was held Thursday, November 8 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, with Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Inurnment was held at the Freeport Cemetery in rural Decorah.
Florence was born November 9, 1923 at home in Traer, the daughter of Charles and Christie (Ingle) Davis. She was educated in the Traer Schools.
Florence was united in marriage to E. Max Van Gorp October 17, 1942 in the Pastor's home in Kirksville, MO. To this union, four children were born, Pat, Mike, Bob and Linda.
Following their marriage, they farmed in the Traer area. During Max's years in service, Florence worked in Waterloo. In 1960, the family came to Decorah and lived in the area for many years. Florence worked at East End Lunch in Decorah and at 66 Café in Waukon.
Florence loved to read and quilt. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, squirrel hunting and mushroom hunting. She especially loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She lost her eyesight at the age of 65.
She became a resident, first at Northgate Care Center in Waukon, then at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, in 2005.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Max, February 8, 2005; her daughter, Patricia Harvey, June 1, 2006; her son-in-law, Donald Harvey, October 3, 2004; two brothers, Charles Davis and Cortez Davis; and her sister, Agnes Engles.
Florence is survived by three children, Mike (Nina) Van Gorp of Waukon, Bob (Wendy) Van Gorp of Cedar Falls, and Linda (Dennis) Johnson of Eldridge; 11 grandchildren, Melissa (Darin) Johnston, Jennifer Harvey, Erin Harvey, Erika (Adam) Delphey, Scott (Heather) Van Gorp, Bridget (Rick) Ronan, Bill (Brandi) Van Gorp, Sarah (Mitchell) Lake, Jason (Samantha) Van Gorp, Troy Johnson, and Kelly (Justin) Diercks; nine great-grandchildren, DaeHan Harvey, Dalton Harvey, Gabrielle Johnston, Faith Johnston, Kathleen Delphey, Matthew Ronan, John Ronan, Emily Ronan and Hayden Van Gorp; a step-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ronan; and a sister-in-law, Lola Hulme of Traer.
Arrangements were handled by Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah.
