Clara Ruroden

Clara M. Ruroden, 91, of Mabel, MN, formerly of Waukon, died Tues., May 1, 2001, at Green Lea Manor in Mabel.

Funeral services were held Fri., May 4, at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon under the direction of Rev. Richard N. Eick. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Clara Mary Gander Ruroden was born Dec. 1, 1909, in Lansing. Her parents were Joseph Frank and Katherine (Weipert) Gander. She grew up in the Lansing area and attended area schools.

On Feb. 19, 1929, she married Loyed Ruroden in West Union. Clara and Loyed farmed in Allamakee and Winneshiek Counties for many years. She was active in all aspects of the general farming operation. Following Loyed's death in 1964 she moved to Waukon, where she worked at the Coffee Shop Cafe and Towne Theatre. In 1984, she moved to Mabel, where she took part in activities at the Methodist Church and was a volunteer at Green Lea Manor.

Clara enjoyed quilting and embroidery, as well as going out to eat, playing cards, and spending time at the Mabel Senior Center. She particularly liked spending time with her family and was known by her grandchildren as "Grandma Rooster."

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loyed; two daughters, Doris (Maynard) Monson and Lorene Solem; an infant son, Clifton; a great-granddaughter, Kari Ann Bickerman; a son-in-law, Kenneth Westby; a sister, Loretta VanBrocklin; and five brothers, Frank, Herbert, Herman, Arnold, and Leonard Gander.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Westby of Mabel, MN, Shirley (Warren) Wise of Hiawatha, and Betty (Joe) Angelone of Los Gatos, CA; a son-in-law, Roger Solem of Cedar Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Casketbearers were Jim and John Westby, Wes and Wayne Wise, and Dean, Steve, Larry, Jerry, and Kevin Solem.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
