CARROL KIESAU

Carrol M. Kiesau, 83, of Waukon, died Tues., Jan. 30, 2001, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Sat., Feb. 3, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Carrol Marian Pladsen Kiesau was born Dec. 26, 1917, on the LaFayette Township, rural Harpers Ferry farm of her parents, Theodore and Oline (Hunstad) Pladsen. She was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church. She attended rural Allamakee County elementary schools before graduating from Waterville High School in 1935. While in school she played on their state-qualifying basketball team. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls to earn her teaching certificate.

On July 8, 1939, she married Edgar Kiesau at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple resided in Waukon, with the exception of a short period of time spent in Clear Lake. Carrol taught at several rural Allamakee County schools as well as in Waukon, Postville, and Clear Lake. She continued taking classes throughout her life; at age 55 she earned a bachelors degree in education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

Carrol was an active member at St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was involved in Ladies Circle, taught Sunday and Vacation Bible School, and was a member of Searchlight and Bible study. She helped with the Boy Scouts when her children were young and was involved in numerous community volunteer projects. Carrol enjoyed playing the piano, playing bridge, raising flowers, and liked to entertain friends in her home. She also collected antique glassware and enjoyed going to sales.

Carrol is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edgar; four sisters, Rosella Tuberty, Agnes Pladsen, Alphild O'Brien, and Valborg Adams; and three brothers, Joseph, Wallace, and Melvin Pladsen.

Survivors include three sons, Eugene Kiesau of North Hollywood, CA, Robert (Carol) Kiesau of Biloxi, MS, and Steven (Cheryl) Kiesau of Beaver Dam, WI; two daughters, Elaine (Harold) Tuchel of Waterloo and Christine (Gerald) Murphy of Janesville, WI; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mavis Cook of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Luella Kiesau of Waukon; and many nieces and nephews.

Casketbearers were Roger Pladsen, Cletus Pladsen, Ronald Randel, Dennis Rehder, Neil Kiesau, and Curt Kiesau.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.

A newspaper clipping of the obituary of Alphild O'Brien has the following note:

PLEASE NOTE
Alphild O'Brien and Carol Kiesau, whose obituaries appear above, were in fact, sisters. Furthermore, though not twins with each other, each was one of two sets of twins born to Theodore and Oline Pladsen. Both women died Jan. 30 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Alphild passed away at approximately 3 p.m.; Carol died later that evening. Thus the reason that each are listed in the other's obituary under "preceding in death".
