Ethel Green
Ethel Green, daughter of Henry and Mildred (Laughlin) Meier, was born February 24, 1898 in Clayton County near Postville, Iowa. She died Tuesday, June 25, 1996 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. She was 98 years old.
Her family moved to the Laughlin farm in Post Township, Allamakee County, north of Postville, shortly after her birth. She attended the Minart school near her home. On July 24, 1918 she was married to Ralph Edgar Green at Decorah, Iowa. The couple has four children, Lloyd Wayne, Mildred Eileen, John Edgar and JoAnn.
The couple settled on an 80 acre farm southwest of Postville following Ralph's discharge from the Army. In 19212 they moved to the Williams farm northeast of Ossian. In 1942 the family moved to the farm northeast of Postville, the farm that Ethel's parents owned. They purchased this farm in 1951 and then moved into Postville in 1972.
Mrs. Green was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, the CPC Womens' organization and a member of the Loyalty Sunday School class. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Post Franklin Study Club.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ralph, who died February 10, 1977 at the age of 81, two sons, Lloyd Wayne and John Edgar, two grandsons, Alan and Richard Hagemeier, a son-in-law, Harold R. Bentley, and four sisters, Alice Folsom, Margaret Schultz, Dorothy Sandvik and Charlotte Fenton.
Surviving are two daughters, Mildred Eileen Bentley of Solon, Iowa and JoAnn and her husband Edward Hagemeier, of Clinton, 14 grandchildren, Ralph Bentley, Howard Bentley, Michael Bentley, Patsy McKinley, Nancy Holley, Linda Cook, Kevin Hagemeier, Craig Hagemeier, Mark Hagemeier, Edwin Hagemeier, Edith Ottens, Barbara Sutton, Wanda Schnuelle, James Green; 28 great-grandchildren and two daughters-in-law, Ruth Green Bruns of Postville and Helen (Hellum) Green.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 28, 1996 at the Presbyterian Church in Postville. The Rev. Gary Catterson officiated. Special music was provided by Hall Roberts, soloist, and Joann Martins, organist. Casket bearers were Robert Heckmann, Dr. R. F. Schneider, William Wullner, K. Ted Green, Jack Dibble and Deane Werger. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
