Mary Cleta Scholtes

Mary Cleta Scholtes, age 91, of LaCrosse, WI died Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at Hillview Health Care Center in LaCrosse. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Oct. 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing. Great nieces and nephews served as casketbearers.

Mary Cleta was born in Lansing October 9, 1915 to William Francis and Mary Clara (Bakewell) Scholtes. She graduated from Lansing High School in 1933 and from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. degree in Education and Iowa State University in Ames with an M.S. degree in Textiles, Clothing and Related Art. She taught in the Textiles and Clothing Department at Iowa State University.

She was awarded a Balderston Fellowship to Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City, where she received a Doctorate in Educational Psychology June 1957. She spent five years as Supervisor of National Field Staff, Pattern Division, McCall Corporation, New York City, and later she spent five years as National Training Advisor, Camp Fire Girls, Inc. in New York City.

Then she returned to the academic field as Associate Professor of Psychology at Rockland Community College in the State University of New York system. In addition, she worked part-time as Art Therapist and Psychotherapist at the Alfred Adler Mental Hygiene Clinic, New York City. She taught Art Therapy at the Alfred Adler Institute. For 10 years she organized study-tours to London for groups of college students. She conducted Psychology Seminars there for a two-week period during mid-semester winter vacations. In September of 1993 Cleta moved to LaCrosse.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews; Mary (Joe) Fisher of Onalaska, WI, Dan (Mary) Scholtes of Lansing, Steven (Patty) Scholtes of Lansing, Tom (Donna) Scholtes of Lansing, Jamie Bjornsen of Lansing, Jeanette Scholtes of Wabasha, MN, and Christine (Larry) Griffith of Hudson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Genevieve Scholtes; and two brothers, James and John (Gretta) Scholtes.
