Emma Caroline Bertha Thoma

Emma Caroline Bertha Thoma, daughter of Hans Herman and Fredericka (Thies Plaht, was born Dec. 4, 1895 at Postville, Iowa. She died Tuesday, May 25, 1993 in the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. She was 97.

She was baptized April 12, 1896 by the Rev. J. Gass and confirmed March 20, 1910 by the Rev. R. B. Kuhne. Emma attended the Henderson Prairie School in Fayette County.

On Feb. 6, 1918, Emma married Fred H. J. Thoma at the Parsonage in Postville by the Rev. E. Schmidt. They had three children. The couple farmed east of Postville until 1950 when they moved to town.

Mrs. Thoma was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and an Honor Roll member of the Women of the ELCA. She also belonged to several card clubs and the Post-Franklin Study Club.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred, who died Sept. 1, 1965; two brothers, Edwin and Walter Plaht, and two sisters, Louise Kahle and Hilma Plaht.

Surviving are two sons, Leonard Thoma and his wife, Ellen, of Postville, and Wesley Thoma and his wife, Delores, of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Ruth and her husband, Ernie Schulz, of Rock Rapids, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Emma Thoma were held Saturday, May 29, 1993 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. R. Michael Brown officiated. Special music was provided by Ken Timmerman, soloist, and Karen Brown, organist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

Casket bearers were Jon Schulz, Paul Garvin, David Carlson, Lee Thoma, Russ Thoma and Doyle Stansberry.
