William "Bill" Hertrampf, 65, of Waukon, IA, died Friday, June 2, 2006 at his home in Waukon following a battle with ALS. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 5th at 11:00 am at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery, Rossville, IA. Friends may call for 1 hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
William "Bill" Loren Hertrampf was born on July 24, 1940 in Waukon, IA, the son of William Gottlieb Hertrampf and Opal Cecelia Hertrampf Beall. His father died when he was 2 years old and Bill was raised by his mother and step-father, Ray Beall. He attended Dorchester Elementary School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1959. Shortly after school he married Carol Iverson. They were later divorced. He moved to the Quad City area where he worked for a number of years for Western Electric and International Harvestor. While he was there he attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport and later he graduated from the University of Iowa with degrees in electrical engineering and physics. In the early 1970's he returned to the Quad Cities and worked as a general contractor. On June 7, 1975 he married Gloria Jean Fichtner in Davenport, IA. In 1976 they moved to rural Ferryville, WI where he operated a 220 acre dairy farm. Bill returned to Waukon where he worked for a short time in the tool and die division of Northern Engraving before moving to Kent, WA in 1981. He took training in computer technology at Green River College in Kent and worked as a CNC programmer. For a number of years he lived in several Washington cities while working for Reynolds Aluminum and J&S Metal Fabrication. In his semi-retirement he headed the maintenance department for a retirement center. Bill returned to Waukon several months ago following his worsening health condition.

Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman, often venturing to the upper ranges of the Cascade Mountains in Washington for both. A man of many trades, he crafted his own rifle stocks, made his own fishing reels and was in the process of designing and building his own home in Port Townsend, WA. Bill was an avid reader of scientific journals, an accomplished gardener and loved working with computers, often not only helping people learn to use them but them giving them one to get started with. Despite his many talents for tasks, Bill's most enduring quality was his love of people. He enjoyed making new friends and staying in touch with old ones and he served as advisor, confidante and helper to many.

Survivors include his wife Gloria of Waukon; 2 daughters, Sarah Jane (Louis) Mihal of Tacoma, WA and their son Alex, and Carrie (Rick) Braasch of Davenport and their children Amanda and Austin; 2 sisters, Lois (William) Benson of Vinton, IA and Irene (James) Elton of Stewartville, MN; 3 half-sisters, Delia Beall and Emma (Mike) Draper, both of Waukon and Jette (Mark) Berken of Prairie du Chien, WI; a half-brother, Carroll Beall of Viroqua, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
