Deering, Leeone Anna (Zieman) 1916-2002

Funeral services for Mrs. Leeone Deering were held Monday, October 14, 2002, at 12:00 P. M. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. Special music was provided by organist, Ramona Everman and soloist, John O. Falb. Casket Bearers were: Charles F. Deering, David Deering, Drew Deering, Michael MacGregor, Jon Christianson, Paul Christianson, and Honorary Casket Bearers were: Lori Podzimek, Stacy Tharp, Daphne Zupke, Lisa Schultz, Melissa MacGregor, Angela Schupbach. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Leeone Anna Emma (nee Zieman) Deering, the daughter of Elmer Zieman and Adaila (nee Meyer) Zieman, was born May 24, 1916, on a farm in Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. She passed away Saturday, October 12, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She was baptized June 10, 1916, by Pastor E. Schmidt, and confirmed August 11, 1929, by Pastor E. T. Finck, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. She was graduated from Postville High School in 1932. Leeone also attended Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar to study Interior Design. Leeone was married to Irving Deering on June 1, 1935, in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. They farmed in Henderson Prairie, southwest of Postville. To their union four children were born: Charles, Robert, Ann and Jane. Leone was active in both her church and community. As a life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, she held many offices for the Women of the ELCA, served on synod committees, and was the first female president of the Church Council. She was also circle and bible study leader and Sunday School teacher. Within the community, Leeone served on the Postville Community Hospital Board of Directors, and held offices in P. E. O. Chapter FT, Monday Club, Grand Meadow Club, and was a charter member of the Henderson Prairie Study Club. She was a 4-H leader and volunteered for many years at the Good Samaritan Center. Leeone was a loving and generous care-giver to many people throughout her life. She enjoyed flower gardening, quilting, rosemaling, baking, and cooking. Her family always came first. Preceding her in death are her husband, Irving, who died in 1957, her parents, Elmer and Adaila Zieman, her mother- and father-in-law, M. C. and Bertha Deering, one brother, Robert Hall Zieman, two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Fischer and Leah Zieman, and four grandchildren, Hope and Holly Deering, and Craig and Michael Deering. Surviving are her children, Charles I. Deering and wife, Carol, and Robert Z. Deering and wife, Sandy, all of Postville, Ann L. Schupbach and husband, Richard of Brooklyn Center, MN, and Jane E. Christianson of Marshall, MN. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Charles F. (Kim) Deering, Lori (Jay) Podzimek, Stacy (Phillip) Tharp, Lisa (Shannon) Schultz, David (Brenda) Deering, Drew (Annette) Deering, Daphne (Bradly) Zupke, Melissa (Michael) MacGregor, Angela Schupbach, and Jon and Paul Christianson; 22 great grandchildren, Kelsie, Whitney, Morgan, and Tanner Deering; Lindsey and Leah Podzimek; Elise and Chloe Tharp; Chase, Marshall, Zachary, and Rourke Schultz; Aaron, Aarik, and Aandi Deering; Tasha and Koal Deering; Madelon and Landon Zupke; Madeline, Alexander, and Aidan MacGregor; a brother, Lyle (Beverly) Zieman of Postville, a sister, Gretchen (John "Jack") Stuhr of Cedar Rapids, IA, and two sisters-in-law, Esther Schultz of Postville, and Marjorie Wallace of Renton, WA.
