Emma Miene

Emma E. Miene, 96, of Waukon died Monday, April 23, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, April 27 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.

Emma Edna Thies Miene was born November 19, 1910 in Lake Benton, MN, the daughter of Lewis and Freelove (Eastman) Thies. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and attended Jefferson Township #7 rural school. Following school she worked for various area families.

April 4, 1934 she married Herbert J. Miene at the Zion United Church of Christ parsonage. They farmed with his parents in Post Township, rural Postville. Emma and Herbert moved to Makee Township and farmed for a short time before purchasing their own farm in 1950 in Union Prairie Township, rural Waukon. Emma raised chickens and sold eggs to several area Waukon families. They moved to Waukon in 1983.

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and its ladies circles. Emma enjoyed spending time with family and friends, eating out, playing cards, walking, crocheting, and watching TV, and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed taking care of the garden raising lots of vegetables for canning. Emma and her sister Florence volunteered at Makee Manor, Northgate Care Center and the Good Samaritan Center for many years.

Survivors include her children, Everett (Janann) Miene of Waukon and Joan (Gordon) Olson of Chatfield, MN; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leonard (Bernice) Thies of Waukon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herbert, who died in 1988; two sisters, Minerva Frink and Florence Hennessy; and four brothers, Louis, Howard, Elmer and Frank Thies.

Casketbearers were Steven, Mark, Brian, Jeffrey and David Olson, and Daniel Mathis.
