August D. Meyer, an old and respected resident of Postville passed away at his home on Thursday, October 24, 1929, aged 76 years, eight months and 26 days, his demise following a comparatively brief but very severe spell of sickness.

He was born in Read Township, Clayton County, near Clayton Center, Iowa, Jan. 28, 1853. His early life was spent at Garnavillo and at the age of fourteen years he came with his parents to Postville and settled what was then known as Springfield, later removing to a farm south of Postville.

He was baptized in Clayton Center and confirmed in Garnavillo.

On August 4th, 1879, he was married in Elkader to Louise Schroeder of Volga Township, near Elkport. This union was blessed with five children: Maggie (Mrs. Henry Dahms) of Luana, Meta (Mrs. Fred Block) of Postville, Henry of Deer River, Minnesota, Fred and Alfred of Postville, all of whom survive.

In his passing he leaves to mourn his widow, five children, ten grandchildren, three brothers; David Meyer of this city, John O. Meyer of Ossian and Herman Meyer of Beloit, Wis., and three sisters; Mrs. Frank Sebastian and Mrs. George Thoma of this city and Mrs. Fred Schara of Prairie du Sac, Wis., and other relatives and many friends.

Mr. Meyer was by occupation a farmer, which occupation he followed with diligence and success until 20 years ago when re retired and moved to Postville, where he resided continuously until his death.

Mr. Meyer was a quiet and unassuming man, a good neighbor and friend, husband and father, whose passing will bring a pang of sorrow to all who knew him.

The funeral was held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city at two o’clock on Monday afternoon, Rev. E.T. Finck conducting the service, which was largely attended. Interment was made in Postville cemetery
