Mabel E. Ashbacher

Mabel E. Ashbacher, daughter of and George and Adelia Jones Russell was born April 5, 1913 on a Village Creek area farm near Lansing, Iowa. She died March 8, 1994 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, Iowa. She was 80.

Mabel attended rural Village Creek elementary school, and graduated from Lansing High School. She took normal (teacher) training in Waukon. She taught school for a number of years at various rural Allamakee County schools.

On June 30, 1932 she married Floyd William Ashbacher in Caledonia, Minn. In addition to teaching, she also farmed with her husband in the French Creek and Sixteen areas of Allamakee County.

She liked to sew, quilt, garden and cook. She was also fond of children and spent time not only with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but also all the neighborhood kids. She enjoyed the companionship of the three dogs and the cat that lived in her home. She lived all her life in Allamakee County, except for 17 years in Mesa, Ariz., from 1960 to 1977, and the last six years in Decorah, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd, who died in 1978; sisters Mary Cole and Enid Ashbacher; and brothers George, Albert, Delbert, Lester and Charles Russell.

Survivors include two sons, George Ashbacher and wife Belva of Harpers Ferry, and Floyd Ashbacher and wife Karen of Decorah; four daughters, Phyliss Wilder of Decorah, Ardis Klepper and husband Curtis of Postville, Delores Klocke and husband Roger of Waterloo, and Frances Ashbacher of Decorah; a sister Jennie Sass of Waukon; 24 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 10, 1994 at Martin Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Jim Dale officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery. Casket bearers were Michael, Brent, Dean and Larry Ashbacher; Monty Wilder; Ray Ages; Gale and Glen Klocke; and Ken and Kevin Klepper. Arrangements were by Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, Iowa.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Martin Funeral Chapel, Waukon, by the Rev. Jim Dale. Burial: Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include two sons, George of Harpers Ferry and Floyd of Decorah; four daughters, Phyllis Wilder and Frances Ashbacher, both of Decorah, Ardis Klepper of Frankville and Delores Klocke of Waterloo; a sister, Jennie Sass, and a brother, Cecil Russell, both of Waukon.
