Norman Vongroven, age 75, of rural Spring Grove, died Monday, September 16, 2002, at Gunderson/Lutheran Medical center in La Crosse, Wis., after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove. Pastor Arndt F. Braaten officiated the service. Burial was in the church cemetery. Roble Funeral Service in Spring Grove assisted with arrangements. Norman Marcellus Vongroven was born Nov. 14, 1926, in Allamakee County to Lars and Laura (Goodno) Vongroven. He attended rural school in Waterloo Ridge Township, Allamakee County. He entered the U.S. Navy on Nov. 27, 1944. He trained at Great Lakes, at Camp Bradford, Northfolk, Va. While in the Navy, he attended schools for amphibian training, welding, boats and mate school, he was a sight trainer and in the Signal Corp. Norman was discharged on July 7, 1946. On September 14, 1945, he married Julia Marion Lasseson at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church. Norman farmed for years at the Waterloo Ridge Twp. farm. He retired in 1980. He enjoyed painting, woodworking, and he loved trout fishing. He was a lifelong member of Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church, where he was active as a cemetery trustee, a deacon, a parsonage trustee, and treasurer. He also served as a trustee for Waterloo Township for many years. He was a member of the Spring Grove American Legion. Survivors include one son, Gordon (Yvonne) Vongroven of Waukon; two daughters, Judy (Jim) Ahles of Postville and Brenda (Wes) Lawson of Waterville; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Lester (Alvina) Vongroven of Spring Grove, Garland (Marjorie) Vongroven of Winona, Minn., and Silas (Beulah) Vongroven of Canton, Minn; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lars and Laura; his wife Julia, and his brother Dale.
