Death of John Preston Gilson

After many weeks of illness, John Preston Gilson died at his home in the south part of the city, on the Rossville Road, Tuesday evening, July 3, 1928.

Deceased was born Sept. 30, 1862, and had reached the age of 65 years, nine months and 23 days at the time of his death. Most of his life was spent in Iowa.

Mr. Gilson's father was killed in service, during the Civil War, and the son, John Preston, was placed in the soldier's orphanage home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Before coming to Waukon to reside he was a pioneer resident of Yellow River, where he was a dealer in fish products.

On the 11th of October, 1884, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Segrist. Deceased was a loving husband and father and during his long illness he showed great patience. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and seven children, four sons and three daughters. They are Albert and John of Rossville, Ora of Forest Mills, and Fred of Waukon, Mrs. Art (Dott) Bender and Mrs. G.L. (Reva) Meskimen of Waukon and Mrs. Seward (Lucy) Swenson of Forest Mills. There are 32 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, also one half brother and four half sisters, besides a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his departure.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church with services by Rev. Krebs. Interment was in the Oakland cemetery.

John Preston Gilson was the son of Francis Alonzo Gilson and Martha Ann (Brookshire) Gilson
