Harold James Valley

Harold J. Valley, 68, of Waukon, died Sat., June 9, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN, following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Tues., June 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Allen Schmitt, the Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg, the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes, Fr. Donald Hawes, and Fr. Bernard Grady officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home assisted with funeral arrangements.

Harold James Valley was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Harpers Ferry to Bernard and Esther (Hawes) Valley. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Ann's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church and graduated from Harpers Ferry High School in 1951. He later attended Cedar Rapids Barber College. Harold married Rose Ella Egan on June 5, 1956, at St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry. He worked for Dewey's Portland Cement Co. in Davenport for a short time before returning to Allamakee County, where he worked for the Mobil Gas Station in Harpers Ferry, Skelly Oil in Waukon, Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co., and the Texaco station in Waukon. Most recently he worked at the Food Ranch and for Pat McMillan Auto, both of Waukon.

Harold was very active at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, serving on the Parish Council and as Eucharistic Minister. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, stock car races, grilling chicken, caring for his cars, traveling and visiting with and helping people. He was also fond of music and attending polka masses.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Mark, Joe, and infant Ralph.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Ella of Waukon; two sons, Tim (Torre) Valley and Kevin (Brenda) Valley, both of Rochester, MN; two daughter, Rita (Lou) Swenson of Waukon and Karen (Kurt) Schulte of Colorado Springs, CO; and nine grandchildren.

Honorary casketbearers were his grandchildren, Brian and Nick Swenson; Erika and Carl Staub; Michael, Justin, and Alison Schulte; and Ellen and Paul Valley, as well as Patrick and Dan McMillan; Gerald and Cyril Hawes; Bill Campbell,;Mary Jo Wolcott; and Kathy Bengtson. Casketbearers were Mark Egan, Bob and Lawrence Benda, Rich and Tom Haberichter, and Jerry Valley.
