Victor H. Walter

Funeral services for Victor H. Walter were held Tuesday, July 14, 1981 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The Reverend David R. Nelson officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Victor Henry Walter, son of Ernest and Clara (Henkes) Walter, was born June 11, 1908 in Clayton County. He died July 11, 1981, at Clear Lake. He was baptized October 3, 1914 and confirmed September 1, 1934, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He received his education in the school at Farmersburg and graduated from the Guttenberg high school. Vic attended a school for mechanics at Janesville, Wisconsin, and assisted his father in operating his Chevrolet garage.

In 1931 he started farming. April 24, 1935 he was married to Lurene Baltz. They built the Postville Locker Plant in 1938 and started the airport at Clermont in 1940, which he managed until Pearl Harbor. He was employed at Wright-Patterson Field until 1942 when he was transferred to Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia.

After WW II he returned to Postville and purchased what is now the "66" station. In 1954 he built the Pines Motel southeast of Postville. In 1974 they retired and since 1963 had spent time in Sarasota, FL. While there he suffered a stroke February 18, 1979.

Vic served as president of the "Whisker Club" during the Postville Centennial in 1949 when funds were raised for the lights at the Athletic Field, and was president of the Northeast Iowa Shrine Club and the Tri-City Golf Club. He was a member of the St. Armands Key Lutheran Church in Sarasota; Rutland Lodge, Macon, GA; El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids, and Postville Chapter No. 238 Order of the Eastern Star.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Maloy and a brother and sister in infancy.

Surviving are his wife, Lurene, and three sisters: Mrs. LeRoy (Dorothy) Schmidt, Waukon, Mrs. Malloyd (Clarion) Mueller, Elkader; and Mrs. Edward (Florence) Klosterboer, Decorah.
