MARCIA LYN WILHELMI

Funeral services were held for Marcia Lyn Wilhelmi, 19, of Postville, formerly of Maynard, Thursday, Sept. 12 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with burial at Long Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Darwin Reiter officiated. Brant-Kerns-Jamison Funeral Home of Oelwein, was in charge of arrangements.

Marcia was born Oct. 29, 1971 in Excelsior Springs, Mo., to Jon and Eileen Wilhelmi. She was later baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Maynard. She graduated in 1990 from West Central where she participated and excelled in athletics. She was a 4-year honor student at West Central and belonged to National Honor Society, Marcia had attended Luther College and was employed at Mores (sic) IGA in Postville.

She died Sept. 9 in a car/train accident near Postville.

She preceded in death by grandparents, Earl and Donna Arthur; two paternal great-grandfathers, Theron Finch and Niles Hughson.

Survivors include her mother, Eileen Arthur of Maynard, her father and step-mother, Jon and Joan Wilhelmi, and two step-sisters, of Maynard; a brother, David of Maynard; her paternal grandfather, Bob Wilhelmi of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; paternal grandmother, Elaine Jones of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; maternal grandmother, Ruth Hughson of Oelwein; her finance, Michael Vagts of Postville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Pall bearers were Gene Arthur, Myron Arthur, Tim Wilhelmi, Vernon Arthur, Jerry Arthur, Rick Wilhelmi, and Rodney Arthur.

A memorial fund has been established.

In the newspaper article Mom has pasted besides Marcia's obituary there is a picture of the smashed car besides the railroad track. It is really smashed. Beneath the picture is written: Marcia Lyn Wilhelmi, Postville, was killed in a car-train accident Monday morning on County Line Road outside of Postville. The vehicle driven by Wilhelmi, shown above, was struck by a train at the railway crossing when she was unable to stop in time for the approaching train.

The story goes: A 19-year-old Postville woman was killed in a car-train accident Monday at 11:06 a.m., 8/10ths of a mile east of Postville on County Line Road in Allamakee County, according to the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office.

The accident report states that Marcia Lyn Wilhelmi was driving a vehicle east bound on the County Line gravel. Wilhelmi noticed an approaching train at the railway crossing, was unable to stop in time and collided with the train.

The Iowa State Highway Patrol investigated the accident. They were assisted by the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office, the Postville Police, Postville Fire and Rescue and the Postville Ambulance Service.

This is not the first fatality at this railway crossing outside of Postville.
