Vivian L. Van Wey, 84, of Waukon, died Friday, September 6, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services was held Monday, September 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Frankville Presbyterian Church with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the Frankville Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Vivian Laverne Van Wey was born May 12, 1918, on the rural Frankville, Iowa, farm of her parents, Glenn and Ruth (Evert) Letchford. She was baptized and confirmed at the Frankville Presbyterian Church and attended school at the Frankville "Stone School" and Postville High School. On March 25, 1935, she married Lester Van Wey in Decorah. She was a homemaker and farmwife with Lester on their farms, first near Frankville and later in Ludlow Township. When they were first married, they also helped to raise Lester's brothers and sisters who lived with them. They have been living in Waukon since 1997. Vivian was a life-long member of the Frankville Presbyterian Church where she was active in the ladies organizations, a couples club, and Willing Workers. She enjoyed gardening and canning and was an excellent cook and baker, known particularly for her pies and divinity candy. She also liked to do crafts and get together with friends to play 500. Her favorite times were spent with her family and grandchildren. She and Lester looked forward to regular visits from their local grandchildren and summer stays from those farther away. She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles Letchford. Survivors include her husband Lester of Waukon; a son, Charles (Shari) Van Wey of Albert Lea, Minn.; a daughter, Jean (David) Schwinefus of Postville; five grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) and Brian Van Wey, Debbie (Scott) Warth, Tharin Schwinefus and Tammy (Eric) Walsh; three great-grandchildren, Lars and Lexie Warth and Landon Walsh; and a sister, Virgean Sanderson of El Paso, Texas; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Casketbearers were Donald and Robert Van Wey, David Cannon, Daryl Szabo, Dennis Schwinefus, and David Sanderson.
