Joseph Hartwick Bakke

November 8, 1919 - January 23, 2007

Joseph H. Bakke, 87, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 pm Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Joseph Hartwick Bakke was born on November 8, 1919 on the rural Waukon, IA farm of his parents, Julius and Helen (Johnson) Bakke. He was baptized and confirmed at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church and attended the rural "Smeby School". After his schooling he worked for several area farmers.

On December 27, 1952, Joe married Mae Jean Severson at Decorah Lutheran Church. They started farming together on a farm they rented in Ludlow Township. In 1965 they purchased a place of their own in Franklin Township and started a general farming operation raising a dairy herd, hogs, beef cattle and grain. They remained on the farm until retiring and moving to Waukon in 1992.

Joe was a very active member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, serving as financial secretary for 35 years and also on the cemetery board. He was also a Franklin Township Trustee and active in the NFO. Reading, playing cards, cultivating horseradish and going out to eat were some of Joe's favorite pastimes. He enjoyed having dogs for most of his life, particularly Mitzie and Pete, his last two, and he was a long-time fan of both the Braves and Cubs. More than anything, Joe enjoyed being with people. He loved to visit with friends whether that was at a church or community event, or while sitting on the front porch of his house.

Survivors include his wife Mae Jean of Waukon; 2 sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and six cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Helmer and Lester.

Honorary casketbearers are Bob Opfer, Roger Martin, Bob Butler, Ron Fedeler, Dennis Soride, Bob Schneider, Bill Moses, Jim Moe, Bill Roe Sr., Otto Thorstenson, Ron Palmer, Linda Riek, Joyce Anderson and Daryl Hansmeier. Casketbearers are Bob Fossum, Robert Kolsrud, Bob Sivesind, Tom Kerndt, Steve Bakke, Dave Hansmeier, Randy Bakke and Richard Hansmeier.
