Mary Alice Short Mettille was born on June 2, 1913 in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Michael and Anna (O'Donnell) Short. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church. Mary attended Jefferson #3 rural elementary school and St. Patrick's School in Waukon before graduating from Waukon High School in 1932. She took the normal training curriculum at Waukon Jr. College where she graduated in 1934, and became certified as a teacher. After teaching rural school for a short time, she married Frank Mettille on September 4, 1939 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon. Mary worked at Schultz Bros. Variety Store in Waukon for many years and then spent time as a full-time homemaker and mother. She decided to go back to school, and in 1969 earned her LPN certificate through Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. She worked on the nursing staff at Northgate Care Center in Waukon for 10 years. Mary was a life-long Waukon area resident until the last several years when she lived with her son, first in Illinois and most recently in Waterloo.
An active member of St. Patrick's Parish, she was a charter member of the Little Flower Study Club as well as involved in other church activities. She loved to grow flowers and enjoyed a number of family vacations when the children were young. One of Mary's passions was cooking. She collected thousands of recipes and loved to share what she made with visitors in her home and as gifts for friends. Spending time with her family, especially playing cards and doing puzzles with her grand and great-grandchildren was another favorite pastime.
Survivors include two children, a son, Frank and a daughter, Mary (James) Donlan, both of Waterloo; 4 grandchildren, Joan (Dean) Walton, Tim (Wendy) and Dan Donlan, and Cathy (Duane) Feldmann; 7 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Caitlin Walton, Tyler and Lindsey Donlan and Nick, Alex, and Alyssa Feldmann; a special niece, Elaine Hirth Petersen of Salt Lake City, UT; and several nephews.
