James L. Mooney, 85, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Feb. 10 at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing, with burial in Gethsemane Cemetery, where military rites were accorded by the Beck - Glenn - Strong Post # 50 of the American Legion and the Gustav F. Kerndt Post # 5981 of the VFW.

James was born November 29, 1921 to Eugene and Celia (Kernan) Mooney. He was a veteran and served with the U.S. Army in WWII. Just as his grandfather Michael, who came from County Meath, Ireland, and his father Eugene, James farmed the fertile soil of northeast Iowa with his brothers Cyril and Vince.

He married Elaine Hurm September 17, 1955. He was a devoted Catholic, an ardent Democrat, a past volunteer for the Lansing Ambulance service, and a member and former Commander of the local VFW.

James was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Gerald (Ida), Ray and Vince.

James is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine; their children, Connie (Greg) O'Neill, of Bend, OR, Cathy of Lansing, Dan (Renee) of New Albin, Dave (Sheryl) of Lansing, and Dawn (Roger) Weeks of LaCrosse, WI; and five granddaughters and five grandsons. He is also survived by his brother, Cyril (Leona); sister Mary Rita (Joseph) O'Regan; and sisters-in-law Mary Mooney and Rosemary Mooney.
